What’s up guys, Matt here.

I want to share something a little different. Not a tutorial, not a haircut breakdown, not a product review. Just a real story about how things don’t always go the way you plan… and why that might be the best thing that ever happens to you.

Because I don’t know where you’re at right now.

Maybe things are going well. Maybe you’ve got a solid job, steady income, everything feels “safe.” Or maybe there’s this little voice in the back of your head saying something’s missing.

That’s exactly where I was.

The Dream Job That Was Supposed to Be Everything

I spent about ten years working with Paul Mitchell.

And honestly, it was everything I thought I wanted.

I worked hard. Showed up early. Stayed late. Helped everyone I could. Taught classes. Supported other artists. Did all the things you’re “supposed” to do when you’re chasing a dream in this industry.

My goal was simple.

I wanted to be on a Paul Mitchell DVD.

That was the dream back then. That was the moment you knew you made it.

Then one day, I’m in Las Vegas at an event, and something crazy happens. They call me up on stage for a leadership award. I’m standing there thinking, this is it. This is the moment everything changes.

I go home, fired up, thinking the call is coming.

It never did.

The Moment Everything Shifted

Three months went by. Nothing.

No opportunity. No next step. No “hey, let’s put you on this platform.”

And I had a choice to make.

I could wait… or I could do something.

So I took the only piece of equipment I had at the time — an iPad — and I filmed my first video.

No fancy camera. No production team. Just a tripod, a cheap mic, and an idea.

That video? It wasn’t good. You can still find it buried somewhere 700+ videos back.

But here’s the crazy part…

It ended up getting millions of views.

The Internet Doesn’t Ask for Permission

That’s when it clicked for me.

Everything I used to do in a classroom — teaching, sharing, helping — it would live for an hour and then disappear.

But online?

It lives forever.

One video could teach thousands of people. Years later, it’s still working for you.

That changed everything.

So I leaned in.

I started posting more. Capturing everything. Sharing everything. Not worrying about perfection, just focusing on putting it out there.

Because the truth is, nobody remembers the one time you didn’t post.

But they do remember the people who show up consistently.

From Free Scissors to Building a Business

At first, my goal was simple.

I just wanted a free pair of scissors.

So I reached out to every company I could think of. Everyone said no… except one.

They said yes.

Then they said, “We’ll send you scissors every week if you keep posting.”

Done.

From there, I asked another question:

“Can I sell these?”

So I learned how to build a website. Set up a store. Started putting products into my videos.

Four years later, we became one of the top distributors in the country.

All from something that started because a phone call never came.

The Lesson Nobody Talks About

Here’s what I learned through all of it:

The path you think you’re supposed to take… isn’t always the right one.

And sometimes the thing that feels like rejection is actually direction.

I thought success was going to come from being chosen.

Turns out, it came from choosing myself.

If You’re Waiting… Stop

If you’re sitting there waiting for someone to give you an opportunity, to notice you, to “pick” you…

Don’t.

You already have everything you need.

The tools are in your hand. Literally.

Start posting. Start sharing. Start building something that belongs to you.

Because once you do that, nobody can take it away.

Final Thought

Things didn’t go the way I planned.

They went better.

So if you’re in that moment right now where it feels like nothing is happening, or things aren’t lining up the way you thought they would…

Good.

That might be exactly what you need.

Just keep going.

Success follows action.

Always.

Wisdom! Thank you for continuing to raise the bar with your wisdom and sincere desire to give stylist what they need. I know when I watch your videos and I have been to your salon in Pennsylvania for classes I am getting solid education and guidance from a truly great educator and mentor without pretense. AND a very smart business man. I did not know your story, it makes me appreciate you even more. You are a truly great man and I have benefitted from for advice on products and techniques. You also have a way of answering questions about what you are doing while you are doing it. Thank you Matt Beck
