Breaking the Stigma: How Katelyn Is Redefining Success Behind the Chair

At FreeSalonEducation.com, we’re always inspired by stylists who are not only growing behind the chair, but also using their voice to elevate the industry.
That’s exactly what Katelyn is doing.
As a rising artist on social media, Katelyn is building a platform that blends real education, honest conversations, and strong technical work, all while challenging one of the biggest misconceptions in the industry: the stigma around chain salons.
A People-First Approach to Hair
Katelyn has been behind the chair for just over two years, but her approach goes far beyond technique.
“I’ve been doing hair for a little over two years now. I chose the beauty industry because I’ve always loved connecting with people on a real, personal level,” she shares. “I truly value the opportunity to create meaningful experiences with my clients every day.”
For Katelyn, the experience is everything.
“My main goal with every client is to make sure they leave feeling better than when they came in. Something as simple as a hot towel at the shampoo bowl, an extra-long head massage, having a genuine conversation, or even respecting someone’s need for quiet time can really impact how a person feels.”
She adds, “I truly believe when you look good, you feel good, and you do good.”
An Unexpected Path That Turned Into Opportunity
Like many stylists early in their careers, Katelyn didn’t start exactly where she imagined.
“I always pictured myself in a more high-end salon environment,” she explains. “But at the time, I was living in a small town in West Virginia where booth rent or working for yourself were really the main options.”
Without an established clientele, she knew she needed a different path, and that is when she found SmartStyle a WalMart hair salon.
“When I found SmartStyle, the security of having consistent clients while also being able to build my speed, confidence, and experience with all types of people really stood out to me. It felt like the right environment to grow in, and it ended up being exactly what I needed at that stage in my career.”

Breaking the Stigma Around Chain Salons
One of the biggest messages Katelyn is passionate about sharing is the reality behind chain salons.
“The biggest misconception is that the quality of work isn’t there, which just isn’t true,” she says. “There are a lot of very talented stylists in value-based salons.”
She makes it clear where the real value comes from:
“At the end of the day, it comes down to the stylist, not the name on the building. You can get amazing results anywhere if the person behind the chair takes pride in their work and has confidence in what they’re doing.”
She also highlights the benefits that are often overlooked.
“I wish more people understood that we are real professionals who take our work seriously. A lot of us are building our skills, our clientele, and our careers just like anyone else in the industry.”
“There are also a lot of benefits that come with working in a chain salon. Having access to dental, vision, health, and even life insurance is something many independent stylists don’t have. There’s also a sense of security in knowing you’ll have clients, support, and the ability to take time off when needed.”

Using Social Media as a Tool for Growth
Katelyn has also built a strong presence online, using social media to educate, connect, and share her reality behind the chair.
“TikTok has honestly been huge for me. I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to be a content creator, so being able to combine that with doing hair has been really exciting.”
Her content goes beyond just showcasing finished results.
“It’s allowed me to not only show my work, but also talk about the reality of being behind the chair in a more unfiltered way. I’ve connected with all kinds of people, from cosmetology students to stylists with 30–40 years of experience.”
At the core of her content is accessibility and empowerment.
“A big message I try to spread is that self-care doesn’t have to cost a lot, and anyone can learn how to feel confident in their hair—even at home.”
Creating Confidence Through Affordable Services
Behind the chair, Katelyn works with a wide range of clients, and that’s exactly what keeps her inspired.
“I see a mix of everything, which I actually love,” she says. “What excites me most about going to work is doing color and layered cuts at an affordable price.”
She’s especially drawn to transformations that create movement and dimension.
“I love anything that creates movement and dimension, those transformations are always the most fun for me. It’s even more rewarding knowing I can provide those services at a price point that makes it accessible for more people and help them feel more confident.”

Advice for New Stylists
For stylists starting out, especially in similar salon environments, Katelyn emphasizes mindset and growth.
“My biggest advice would be to stay open-minded and take full advantage of the opportunity,” she shares. “You’re going to get a lot of hands-on experience and learn from stylists at all different skill levels, which is incredibly valuable.”
She also reminds new stylists where real learning happens.
“As long as you’re willing to learn and stay open, the education is always there. It doesn’t always have to come from a formal class, a lot of it comes from simply showing up, doing your best, and learning from every client.”
And most importantly:
“Try not to compare your journey to anyone else’s. Everyone grows at their own pace, and focusing on your own progress will take you a lot further.”
Looking Ahead
Katelyn’s future goals are rooted in growth, education, and impact.
“My goals for the future in the industry are to continue growing behind the chair, building my clientele, and eventually branching into education.”
She adds, “I truly value education and believe it’s the foundation of a great stylist—having both strong guidance and the willingness to keep learning.”
What motivates her most is inspiring others.
“I get really excited when I hear that I’ve inspired someone or helped them learn something new. Being able to support other stylists in growing their confidence and skills is something I would love to continue doing in the future.”
