Great Hairstylist, Struggling Content Creator? Let’s Fix That.

I’ve talked to tons of stylists over the years about content creation and social media. For most, the biggest hurdle isn't a lack of talent, it’s that they either don’t know what to post or haven’t started because they have no clue where to begin.
I’m here to tell you: it’s not nearly as hard as you think. Successful content creation requires strategy, consistency, and creativity. As a hairstylist, you already possess those skills. You use them every time you formulate a color or map out a precision cut. It is entirely possible to produce social content that boosts both your professional profile and your bank account.
Clarity First: What Are You Attracting?
Before you pick up your phone, you need to define your goal. Your "why" guides your strategy. Are you trying to:
-
Fill your chair with more local clients?
-
Build a platform as an industry educator?
-
Promote a product line or generate affiliate sales?
Once you have that answer, here is how you build your roadmap:
1. Great Content Tells a Story
If your goal is clientele, your content should feel like an invitation. Film real clients and tell the story of the experience: the consultation, the process, and the transformation.
If your goal is education, teach in a way that builds authority. Show the problem first, then the solution, then the result. If you’re demonstrating a styling tip, explain why a certain technique isn't working before showing the fix. That "ta-da" moment at the end only matters if the viewer understands the journey it took to get there.
2. Guessing is Not a Strategy
Don’t rely on "vibes" to decide what to post. Use data to find out what people actually want to see.
I personally use Google Gemini for this. I feed it my audience profile and my goals, then ask: "What are my audience's biggest pain points right now?" The lightbulb moment for me happened when I realized a huge struggle for my audience was making curls last. I stopped guessing, created targeted content around that specific problem, and watched it go viral over and over. If you aren't using data, you’re just throwing ideas at a wall and hoping they stick. That’s how you get burnt out.
3. Filming Hacks: Tools and a Plan
Filming often feels overwhelming, especially if you’re a solo creator. Two things change the game:
-
The Right Tools: A sturdy tripod and a portable light are non-negotiable. They make your results look professional and your process much faster.
-
The "Short and Sweet" Rule: Stop trying to film a two-hour appointment. Capture bite-sized, 30-second clips: the consultation, the color mix, the application, and the final reveal. Short clips are easier to edit and significantly more effective on social media.
4. Cast That Hook!
Always assume the person watching has no idea who you are. Most people watch social media on silent, so if you don’t have a hook, they’re scrolling past you. A winning video uses three things simultaneously:
-
A Visual Hook: An eye-catching transformation or movement.
-
A Verbal Hook: Saying exactly what the video is about in the first two seconds.
-
Text on Screen: Telling the viewer why they should stay.

5. Captions Really, Really Matter
Hashtags aren't the powerhouse they used to be; social media is now about search. I write long, detailed captions that break down exactly what is happening in the video. By using the right keywords in your captions, your content shows up organically on Google and other major platforms. That is the holy grail of online visibility.
Turn Your Content Into Cash
Content isn't just about "likes" it’s a separate income stream. With the majority of retail beauty purchases happening outside of the salon, you cannot afford to ignore the 24/7 online marketplace. By being intentional, responding to comments and directing people to your links, your content literally works for you around the clock.
Stop overthinking it. Start with a strategy, stay consistent, and let your content help you live your best life.

Headline: Great Hairstylist, Struggling Content Creator? ✂️📸
I hear it all the time: “Matt, I don’t know what to post,” or “I don’t even know where to start.”
Here’s the truth: You’re already creative, you’re already strategic, and you’re already consistent with your craft. Applying that to social media is easier than you think.
3 Quick Tips to Start Today: 1️⃣ Tell a Story: Don’t just show a finished look. Show the consultation and the "why" behind the transformation. 2️⃣ Use Data: I use Google Gemini to find exactly what my audience is struggling with (like making curls last!) so I can solve their problems. 3️⃣ Cast a Hook: Most people watch on silent. Use text on screen and a strong visual in the first 2 seconds to stop the scroll.
