If you’ve ever felt like your bob haircuts just aren’t hitting the way you want them to… you’re not alone. According to Travis, and honestly from my own experience teaching, this is one of the most misunderstood haircuts in the industry.

But before you do, I want to break down what he’s talking about, because there are a few key fundamentals in here that can completely change your results behind the chair.

The Reality About the Bob

Travis said something that really stuck with me:

Most stylists never truly master the bob because they skip the fundamentals.

And he’s right.

The bob looks simple. That’s what makes it dangerous. When something looks easy, people tend to overlook the details that actually make it work.

This haircut is all about precision, balance, and control. If one small thing is off, the entire shape falls apart.

The 3 Fixes That Change Everything

1. Hand Positioning Is Everything

When cutting a bob, your goal is to keep the hair as close to zero degrees as possible. That means the hair is falling naturally, flat, and parallel to the ground.

What Travis emphasizes (and I 100% agree with):

  • Your index and middle fingers should be parallel to the ground

  • This ensures the top and bottom of the section are cut evenly

If your fingers are angled even slightly, you’re going to create imbalance in the section without realizing it.

2. Head Position + Your Eye Level

This is the one I see stylists mess up all the time.

  • The client’s head needs to be up

  • You need to drop your body down

  • Your eyes should be level with the cutting line

Why does this matter?

Because if you’re cutting from above or at an awkward angle, you’ll instinctively twist your fingers just to see what you’re doing. That twist basically creates a layered effect in the hair.

And what happens next?

The hair flips out.

3. Body Position = Control

This is a big one that gets overlooked.

When you’re working through a section, especially around the round of the head:

  • You should always position yourself in the center of the section

  • Stay balanced between the left and right side

Why?

Because this prevents unintentional over-direction.

If you’re off to one side, you’re automatically pulling hair toward you without realizing it, which throws off the entire shape.

My Take on This

What I love about this breakdown is how simple it is.

No gimmicks. No complicated sectioning patterns.

Just fundamentals.

And that’s the stuff that actually makes you better.

If you dial in:

  • Your hand position

  • Your eye level

  • Your body positioning

You’re going to see a massive difference in your bob haircuts almost immediately.
