I’m Matt Beck, and if there’s one thing I’ve noticed at Free Salon Education this year, it’s that clients are craving cuts that don’t just look killer in the salon mirror, they need to grow out beautifully and work with their real-life morning routine. Whether they’re ready for a total transformation or just a seasonal refresh, these are the trends dominating the scene.

Short Hair: Soft, Intentional, and Full of Personality

Short hair in 2026 isn't about rigid, sharp lines. We’re seeing a move toward softer, more intentional shapes like refined pixies, jaw-length bobs, and even some really wearable, soft mullet shapes. The "secret sauce" here is internal layering, removing weight exactly where you need to while keeping that soft, lived-in silhouette.

The Bixie: The Ultimate Hybrid

The Bixie is still the powerhouse of the short hair world. It’s that perfect "middle ground" for the client who wants the edge of a pixie but isn't ready to give up the face-framing security of a bob.

  • The Vibe: A chin-length crop with those tapered, shattered details you usually see in a pixie.
  • The Tech: Focus on soft blending through the back. This is what makes the grow-out process so seamless, which is a huge selling point for your clients.
  • Who it’s for: It’s fashion-forward but totally approachable—the perfect "gateway" cut for someone transitioning from longer hair.

Medium Length: The Return of the Modern Shag

Mid-length hair isn’t just an "in-between" phase anymore; in 2026, it’s the destination. We’re seeing a massive focus on "lived-in" volume and texture.

The 2026 Shag & The Power Lob

The modern shag is a bit more sophisticated than what we’ve seen in the past. We’re using shorter layers around the crown to build height, but we’re blending them seamlessly into the length.

Then you have the Collarbone Lob. It sits right at the collarbone with a blunt perimeter, but we’re tucking "ghost layers" inside to create the illusion of thickness and movement without losing that clean, sharp edge.

Long Hair: The Butterfly Cut and Flow

For the long-haired clients, 2026 is all about the Butterfly Cut. Long hair shouldn't feel heavy or stagnant, it needs to flow.

  • The Butterfly Effect: This uses heavy, sweeping face-framing layers that mimic, you guessed it, butterfly wings. It gives the client that "short hair volume" look when it's pinned up, but they get to keep every inch of their length.
  • Fluid Perimeters: We’re moving away from those dated "V-shapes" and toward rounded, fluid perimeters. The goal is a shape that looks just as good air-dried on a Sunday morning as it does after a professional blowout.

Elevate Your Craft

If there’s one takeaway for this year, it’s that customization is everything. No two head shapes or hair densities are the same, and your cutting system should reflect that.

At Free Salon Education, my goal is always to show you the why behind the technique so you can adapt these trends for whoever sits in your chair. If you're ready to master these 2026 shapes, dive into our digital cutting systems and let's get to work.

Keep it creative, stay inspired, and I'll see you behind the chair.
