The Modern Shag Haircut: Achieve Layered Texture and Effortless Movement
Hello FSE! We're diving into a cut that's hitting all the right trends: the Shag haircut. This look is all about high-impact layers, beautiful texture, and that cool, effortless vibe your clients are asking for. It’s a creative, customized cut that brings back the best of the shag with a modern, fresh twist.
Sectioning & Precision Layering: Building the Foundation
The key to a successful shag is creating layers that add volume and frame the face perfectly. We start with a center parting to establish the foundation for the front and top of the head.
Front Layers (Stationary Guide Technique)
-
Establish the Guide: We begin by working in a round-shaped section over the forehead, following the head shape, and bringing the hair up to a 90-degree angle. This is where your stationary guide (Section 1) is cut to the desired length.
-
Over-Direction: Using this central stationary guide, all subsequent sections (Section 2, 3, 4) are over-directed to the center point. This technique ensures maximum layering around the face and top of the head.
-
Strategic Disconnection: Once we reach approximately Section 5 (around the temple area), we stop over-directing and leave the hair disconnected. This is vital for preserving length on the sides while concentrating volume and texture in the interior.
-
Pro Tip for Fine Hair: For guests with fine hair, we recommend making this disconnection point slightly thicker or fuller. This area acts as a "density saver" to prevent the sides from looking too thin.
-
Maintaining Consistency: Body Position is Key
When moving to the opposite side of the head, maintain the exact same body position. This ensures your combing and tension remain consistent, pulling the hair toward the center guide on both sides. Consistency in movement equals balance in the final cut!
The Back: Creating Concave Layering
For the back section, we employ a technique often called concave layering (or whatever you prefer to call it!). The goal is to collapse weight in the interior while pushing it out to the sides for that signature shag shape.
-
Stationary Guide (Center Back): Take a central section in the back and use a stationary guide—everything is brought to this center point and cut parallel to the floor.
-
Result: This pushes the weight to the sides of the head, making the center layers the shortest point in the interior. Just like the front, keep your combing consistent, pulling the hair to the center from both the left and right sides.

Finishing Touches: Texturizing & Styling for the Modern Shag
Once the foundational layers are set, we move to the dry cutting and finishing phase to inject movement and softness into the cut.
Advanced Texturizing Tools
For unparalleled blending and texture, we utilize the FSE Dual 20 Pro shear.
-
Purpose: This dual-purpose shear excels at blending and texturizing without removing excessive bulk. Its design ensures a smooth, melting effect through the hair, softening the lines without creating harsh chunks.
-
Technique: Use the blending side (blade down) to slide the scissor in and work through the layers, creating that light, airy texture.
-
The Stroking Technique
The stroking technique, performed with the FSE Precision Elite Limited Edition shear, is used to detail the perimeter and add soft, subtle layering to the ends.
-
Technique: Come down the hair strand, lightly closing the scissor as you approach your hand. This is followed by a solid, blunt line at the very bottom to ensure a clean, fresh finish.
-
Refining the Disconnection: Don't forget to address that disconnected section! We often find that maintaining the subtle disconnect adds a unique element to the final shape, refining it later with vertical point cutting to maintain the horizontal line while introducing softness.

Modern Shag Styling
To finish and give the shag that truly modern feel, we incorporate the Dyson Airwrap to flip out the layers. This technique enhances the shape, emphasizing the layers and the cool fringe. A little spray wax added at the end boosts the texture and holds those flips, showcasing the beautiful disconnection and overall shag effect.
